Beginner’s Astro Imaging Workshop Weekend

CAO panorama by Dietmar Kupke

UPDATE 2016-05-30: REGISTRATION CLOSED

Due to the overwhelming interest our members have shown in the Beginner’s Astrophotography Workshop, the CAO is now at full capacity and we cannot accept any additional workshop participants or members/visitors wishing to go up to the CAO for their own observing or imaging projects during the June 24 - 26 weekend. If you are interested in the workshop and do not have a confirmed reservation, we will be taking names on a waitlist and will advise you if an opening arises. To get onto the waitlist, please make a CAO booking on this website and in the comments section indicate your desire to be put on the waitlist for the June 24 – 26 astrophotography workshop.

The RASC TC Astrophotography Group and CAO Management Committee are pleased to announce that we will be offering a Beginner’s Astro Imaging Workshop Weekend at the CAO this summer for all participants looking to try astrophotography for the first time at a kick-ass dark site, or looking to put into practice some of the techniques we’ve learned in the NOVA program and astrophotography sessions.

The proposed date for the Workshop has been scheduled for Friday evening, June 24 – Sunday, June 26 noon (3rd quarter moon), with a rain date scheduled for July 8–10, 2016 weekend (new moon).

Suggested exercises for that workshop include:
• Astrophotography without a telescope
• DSLR with lens on tripod for timelapse, star trails etc.
• DSLR with lens on tripod for single shot (20 - 30 seconds) Milky Way wide field (non-tracking mount)
• DSLR with lens on portable tracking mount (Star Adventurer, SkyTracker etc.) – longer FL lens for deep sky or wide field
• or anything you want to try!

The CAO Committee has graciously offered to provide their venue and support as necessary free of charge for all participants ($20/night for in-house and $10/night overnight camping fees are waived). Participants will have to supply their own food/drink, and bedding/personal toiletries, but the CAO have advised that the camaraderie and good times there are free. [UPDATE: Due to the high interest by our members for this workshop, all the bed spaces within the CAO house for overnight stays are now taken. However, if you like to camp in your tent overnight on the CAO grounds, we are welcoming more participants for the workshop].

Please note that this is a Member’s Only event as an RASC TC membership is required to register. Please visit the CAO Web Page and be sure to state that you are registering as a participant for this workshop in order to avoid fees.

Based on the interest and success of the first workshop, we have also tentatively scheduled a follow up session #2 to cover more advanced techniques using a telescope, tracking equipment and software, etc.
