New Members orientation program – First Light - Spring 2014

Royal Astronomical Society of Canada, Toronto Centre, invites all members and family members to join an orientation get together, named First Light. This is for all members who have not participated in this event before.

In this program we welcome you to the society and to provide orientation about the activities and opportunities within the club.  We shall help you get started with observing, learning, sharing and enjoying astronomy! Above all, let’s get to know each other. Let us answer questions and address curiosities about the club and the hobby!

We shall meet three consecutive Tuesdays (April 22, April 29 and May 6) from 7:30 pm to 9:30 pm (approx). Topics to be covered:

Main topics by date:

  • Day 1, April 22nd, 2014: Orientation to RASC Toronto Centre activities, facilities and all perks, Astronomy on a Budget, and the Telescope Loan Program
  • Day 2, April 29th, 2014, the RASC certificate program, Logging and Sketching your observations, and Telescope Equipment for Beginners
  • Day 3, May 6th, 2014, Astrophotography and Using Planetarium Software

After each presentation, we shall open up the floor to participants  to ask ANY question about astronomy, RASC, telescopes, books, show & tell of astronomy gadgets, etc, etc, etc. The possibilities are endless!

If weather permits, we will look through one or two of the small telescopes housed at the David Dunlap Observatory, or we may have a chance to observe with the largest telescope in Canada, which is housed in the dome of the David Dunlap Observatory (DDO)! Yes! DDO is the venue for the First Light program. If the weather is in a bad mood, we shall still be able to have a close look at the telescope and learn about it! The program is free and we ask you to register on our First Light registration page. Please include your full name and the full names of the family members attending with you. We shall send you a confirmation email.
