RASCTO Astrophotography Club Session #3

Image of Jupiter with Ganymede transit and Io by Jim Chung

Planetary Photography: Beginner & Advanced Techniques
Presenter: Jim Chung

Jupiter season is once again upon us and the big guy still remains well situated high in the night sky for Northern latitudes as opposed to Mars and Saturn.

Photographing planets requires a completely different approach and mindset to photographing deep space objects. Planets are much more dynamic than nebulas or galaxies, changes occur every season. Photographing planets is as glamorous as photographing deep space objects, and you won’t have to drive hours to a dark site to do it!

Forget polar alignment and long exposures. Expect to spend hours processing data and to experience aperture fever…and expect to become a connoisseur of sky quality not just settling for clear skies!

During this session, we will talk about:
• All the equipment that you may need
• Multiple pieces of software and how to operate them
• The latest cutting edge techniques of obtaining the best data
• The latest processing techniques to bring that data to life
• An RASC group trip to Barbados for planetary imaging nirvana
