Speaker's Night: Gravity: The Science Behind the Movie

Dr. Lisa Esteves, University of Toronto

The academy award winning film Gravity is a cinematographic wonder. It marks an impressive feat of science, suspense and scenery. But how truly accurate is the science behind the movie? Could a missile strike on a satellite truly cause the devastation seen in the movie? Would a Manned Maneuvering Unit really be able to bring astronauts from the Hubble Telescope to the International Space Station? Is that how astronauts actually live and work in space? In this talk Lisa Esteves will examine the science behind the movie, and discuss what is possible vs. what is plausible.
