Richard Bloch, PhD student, York University

We think of time as an ever-flowing phenomenon that brings us from the past to the future through the present. But over a century ago Einstein showed us that this is not the structure of time, and in the ensuing years it has become clear that time is very different from our familiar understanding. What is time? What did Einstein tell us about it? If we do not have a past, present, and future, how are we supposed to think of time? This talk reviews what we have learned about time through special relativity, and shed light on the structure of time as we know it today. Richard gave his presentation at the RASC, Toronto Centre Speaker's Night, which was held at the Ontario Science Centre on February 12, 2020.
