York University Allan I. Carswell Observatory: Free Public Viewing (SUSPENDED)

Submitted by rasc@johnginder.com on 18 January 2020

Due to the COVID-19 pandemic, York University has decided to modify its normal operations to ensure the health and safety of its community and guests. In keeping with York University’s decision, effective immediately all Public Viewing and tour activities at the Observatory are suspended until April 30, 2020. We apologize for any inconvenience this may cause and will update our website and Social Media accounts as appropriate.

Our Monday night Online Public Viewing sessions will continue to operate as usual.

York University has a long history of conducting Public Viewing experiences, revealing the beauty of astronomical images to anyone interested in the night sky. We offer this opportunity free of charge.

The Allan I. Carswell Observatory is now home to a 1-metre diameter reflecting telescope, the largest astronomical telescope on a university campus anywhere in Canada. We are now inviting those interested in observing the night sky to join us on any Wednesday evening throughout the year.

For one hour you will be treated to an astronomy presentation and then telescopic observing of the night sky delivered by members of the Observatory Team. Space is limited. Viewing capacity in the dome is limited to ~20 people at a time.

The event is free and guests of all ages are welcome. Guests are advised to dress for the temperature as the dome is neither heated nor cooled. Public Viewing operates regardless of the weather but the use of the telescope depends on clear skies. The astronomy presentation and guided tours of the astronomical facilities will always occur. Ample opportunity to ask questions of the Team will be available.

Join members of the Observatory Team in room 317 of the Petrie Science and Engineering building to start your astronomical experience!

Due to the arrival of the 1-metre telescope and the limited capacity of the domes, registration for public viewing will be required. Please register for public viewing here.
