Solar Observing (GO for Tuesday)

Join us at the Ontario Science Centre for a special Solar Observing event on the TELUSCAPE observing pad. This is the area in front of the Science Centre's entrance. We use specialized telescopes that are safe to aim at the Sun.  Please note that we make our GO/NO-GO calls a few hours before an event but, if the weather worsens, we may have to cancel or wrap up earlier than planned. We'll try to post updates but please use your best judgment if you're planning to join us.

Toronto Biennial of Art: Wigwam Chi-Chemung - Talk & Stargazing

During the opening weekend of the Toronto Biennial of Art, an intimate conversation under the stars brings together artist, poet and educator Elder Duke Redbird and renowned astrophysicist Dr. Renée Hložek to discuss the human relationship to the cosmos from a multiplicity of perspectives.

DDO Astronomy Family Night (WAITLIST)

Families will be introduced to the wonders of astronomy through a presentation on a variety of exciting astronomy topics, followed by age-appropriate celestial activities and a demonstration of the 74" telescope. If the sky is clear the dome will be opened and the telescope pointed to an interesting celestial object for the visitors to view. All participating family members must be registered and any participants under the age of 16 must be accompanied by a registered adult.

RCIScience/Indus Space: Oceans: Beyond Earth

Join RCIScience at Mississauga Central Library this Science Literacy Week to explore the roles oceans play in our lives and take a look at ocean scenes from across the Solar System! Local and national exhibitors will be sharing their expertise on a variety of topics with hands-on science demonstrations. Learn more about oceans, climate change, and what action your community is taking to help! All ages welcome (under 5 with caregiver).

McMaster Planetary Society: Space Café

Calling all space lovers! The McMaster Planetary Society will be hosting a Space Café on September 19th, 2019 from 8:00pm-11:00pm at Bridges Café. Come out and join us for our first event of the year where you can celebrate your love of space with others and listen to talks from fellow McMaster students who have had opportunities in the space industry! This event is in correspondence with Science Literacy Week. Light refreshments will be provided.

Cliffcrest Library: Common Misconceptions of the Universe

People have deeply-held misconceptions about the most basic astronomical topics, such as the cause of the seasons. In this profusely-illustrated, non-technical presentation, some "heavenly errors" will be discussed, from everyday life, to exotic black holes, to the birth of the universe. Presented by Dr. John Percy, Professor Emeritus at the University of Toronto, in Astronomy & Astrophysics and in Science Education.

McMaster's Sidewalk Astronomy: Science Literacy Week 2019

Join the Sidewalk Astronomy team with their two telescopes (10" and 12" in diameter) to view Venus, Mars, Jupiter, Saturn, star clusters, and nebulae. Our astronomy is weather permitting, so please check the Sidewalk Astronomy website to confirm if skies are going to be clear! Rain date: Saturday, September 21, 2019.
